Freediving, Shark Encounters & Feeling Like a Mermaid: A Fader Interview

Freediving, Shark Encounters & Feeling Like a Mermaid: A Fader Interview

We recently caught up with Racheal, one of our incredible Fader customers, who’s spent years exploring the ocean—one breath at a time. Her love for the sea started young, evolving from snorkelling into a full-blown freediving obsession. Now, she travels the coast in search of marine life, connection, and stillness beneath the surface. From awe-inspiring shark encounters to finding confidence in a wetsuit that finally fits just right, Racheal shares what keeps her diving back in.

So, how did your freediving journey begin? Has the ocean always had a hold on you?

My connection to the ocean has always been strong, drawn in by its beauty. Like many, my underwater adventures began with snorkelling. However, the more I immersed myself in that ocean, the more fascination took hold, making freediving feel like a natural progression. It wasn't just an interest; it blossomed into a true obsession. As time passed, each encounter with marine life fuelled my desire to linger longer in their world. The more incredible creatures I witnessed, the stronger the pull to extend my breath-hold and be with them. That desire to connect with the sea life in their element is what constantly calls me back.

You’ve travelled a lot for diving—do you have a favourite spot that really stands out?

I’ve been to many destinations, so this is a tough one! My all-time favourite dive spot is actually right here in Australia: Jillian Rocks. It's gleaming with life and an abundance of leopard and grey nurse sharks.

Diving here is always breathtaking. Seeing these magnificent creatures glide through the reef, surrounded by countless other marine species, is an unforgettable experience. Every dive at Jillian Rocks leaves me feeling connected to the ocean's vibrant heart. It's my underwater paradise that’s close to home!

Have you ever had a moment underwater that totally caught you off guard—good or bad?

Yes, I certainly have! I remember one particular time at Tangalooma.

Picture this: one minute you're blissfully swimming back from a dive at the shipwrecks, the next you're battling a rip current and coming face-to-face with a bull shark for the very first time. That unexpected combination definitely left a lasting impression- thankfully he was chill and ended up swimming away! It was a stark reminder that the ocean can go from tranquil to terrifying in an instant.

You’ve been diving in a Fader for a while now—how has it impacted your time in the water?

Wearing a Fader wetsuit has been a game-changer for my time in the water! I've always searched for that perfect balance of fashion and comfort, which is surprisingly elusive. But the shark camouflage concept of Fader blew me away and I had to try it. Since switching, I've experienced three major benefits: incredible comfort, a feeling of being like a "sexy mermaid" (which boosts confidence!), and, most remarkably, I've been able to get significantly closer to sharks to capture on film. It's truly enhanced my entire diving experience.

And if you could give one bit of advice to someone new to freediving, what would it be?

Believe in your capability. I remember the nerves, and even now they can creep in. But take a breath and remind yourself: you are capable. Relaxation is the key, the lower the heart rate, the longer the breath hold. Time is your ally; embrace a slow pace. The ocean's beauty unfolds gradually -cherish each moment. Before you know it, comfort and confidence will blossom.

Huge thank you to Racheal for sharing your stories and ocean magic with us! We’re endlessly inspired by your adventurous spirit and the way you move through the sea with such grace. 🌊💙
