Donning an Open-Cell Wetsuit (Without Damaging It or Yourself)
Open-cell wetsuits are incredibly warm and high-performance, but they’re also delicate and need to be put on with care. The internal “suede-like” neoprene can tear easily if pulled dry or handled roughly. Many struggle not because of sizing, but because the suit hasn’t been donned correctly.
Once you get the technique right, it becomes easy, fast, and actually kind of ritual-like.
Before you start
Remove all jewellery, watches, rings, and anything with sharp edges. Even long nails can damage the open-cell lining.
Have your lubricant ready:
Mix hair conditioner with water (roughly 1:10 to 1:20). Use a gentle, non-allergenic conditioner. This reduces friction and protects the internal surface of the suit.
Step-by-step guide
1. Lubricate the suit (inside first)
Pour a small amount of the lube mix into the suit (a cup or two) and gently slosh it around so the entire internal surface is coated. This is what allows the suit to glide on without resistance.
2. Lubricate your skin
Apply the same mixture directly to your body; legs, arms, torso, and neck. If possible, get someone to help you, especially for your back.
3. Start with the legs
Step into the suit one leg at a time. Pull slowly and evenly, using flat hands rather than fingertips. If it feels stuck, add more lube, don’t force it.
4. Move up through the body
Continue gradually up the hips and torso, making sure the suit is evenly seated before moving on. Take your time here, this is where most people rush and damage the lining.
5. Jacket / top section
Lubricate your upper body again before putting on the jacket. Slide arms in one at a time, then gently pull the body section into place.
6. Head and hood
Some people prefer head first (before you put your arms in), others last—go with what feels easiest for you. Take a deep breath and be gentle when passing the suit over your face. Never pull aggressively from one side.
Taking it off (just as important)
This is where most damage happens.
- Never grab or pull the open-cell interior directly
- Always peel the suit off using the outer surface only
- Roll it inside out as you remove it
- For the hood, fold it back carefully and peel it away without stretching or tugging the inner lining
Final note
An open-cell wetsuit should feel snug, not impossible. If it feels like a struggle, it’s usually a lubrication or technique issue, not the wrong size.
Once you get the method right, it becomes smooth, fast, and extends the life of your suit significantly.
